CROSSCUT SAW

IN DEBT? YOU BET!

It's heartening to know that there are bands out there that are inspired by the original forebears of rock music rather than directly by bands a number of generations down the track. Leeds' finest exponents of the blues, Crosscut Saw have plied their trade around these parts for a number of years (nine, in fact) but their fans haven't had a chance to lay their hands on an album until now. Produced by Richard Green at Attic Studios on traditional reel-to-reel and vintage gear, the resulting work is a pleasure to listen to. The ten tracks are in the majority cover versions of old tracks, like the sympathetic rendition of Leave My Little Girl Alone (Buddy Guy), mouth harp simplicity of I Don't Care No More (Sonny Boy Williamson) and Smell A Rat (Buddy Guy) - a track that fades in incredibly slowly, providing a real live club feel. The 'Saw also write their own tracks, and these sit perfectly with the covers, 24-7 is their standout, a tale of rampant consumerism, rather than a tribute to the YEP's Saturday entertainment guide! The song throws up an interesting point for debate though - can you really refer to modern items CDs, DVDs, and wide screen TVs in blues songs? Are they anachronistic in music of this type? Whatever you think, if you like the blues, then you should be getting this LP and catching the band at The Duck and Drake, Kirkgate, Leeds on Thursday 27th November.
